Cheers to 25 Years: A Mighty Citizen Timeline
This year marks a monumental milestone for Mighty Citizen: We’re celebrating 25 years of empowering mission-driven organizations! From our humble beginnings in a college apartment to becoming a B Corp Certified agency making an impact across the nation, our journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Take a look at the key moments that have shaped Mighty Citizen over the last 25 years.
1999
Let us take you all the way back to 1999 (great year!). Our Founder & CEO, Nick Weynand, planted the seeds for what would become Mighty Citizen. Operating under a different name, Nick started the agency in his college apartment, landing our first client—Wet Willie Waterslides!
2002
Nick hired our first full-time employee, a developer with expertise in classic Active Server Pages (ASP), signaling the start of our team’s growth.
2003
The agency officially became TradeMark Media Corporation (TMM), incorporated in Texas.
2005
We purchased our first office at 2401 East 6th Street in Austin, moving in a team of four to the cozy studio space.
2007
Our partnership with the Texas Association of Broadcasters marked our first major association project, where we designed their website.
2009
We celebrated our 10th anniversary with a 90s-themed party, complete with Beanie Babies, 78,702 glasses, and koozies. That same year, we completed a website project for our first major university client, Huston-Tillotson University, an HBCU in Austin (and our current neighbors at our Webberville offices!).
2010
Our first big government project launched: a campaign website for the Texas Historical Commission. Fun fact—over a decade later, we partnered with THC again to refresh their website!
2011
As our team expanded, we moved into a new office off West 6th Street in Austin.
2013
We partnered with our “unofficial alma mater,” the University of Texas, for a website project with UT’s Division of Recreational Sports. We also moved back to Austin’s east side, settling into an office on East 7th Street.
2015
We transitioned into our current 8,100 sq. ft. office space on Webberville Road in Austin’s creative east side. That year, we earned a spot on the Inc. 5000 list, with a 228% growth rate over three years.
2016
Nick joined forces with Rachel Clemens through the acquisition of her creative agency, Creative Suitcase. The acquisition expanded TMM’s creative and branding chops, and even earned coverage in the Austin Business Journal.
2018
After much deliberation, Mighty Citizen was born! We unveiled our new brand and identity, signaling our commitment to serving mission-driven organizations. All of this, of course, followed quite a bit of workshopping on what our new brand would be (and what we’d be called). Take a look at some of our brand ideation through the merger that created Mighty Citizen:
2019
We celebrated 20 years by launching our first Mighty Big Grant, awarding $25,000 in marketing services to Humanity & Inclusion. We also hosted our first-ever Mighty Big Day conference and hired our first Client Engagement Director, launching nationally into the Association space.
2020
As the world adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic, we transitioned to a remote-first workplace—a change that has stuck with us to this day. We also became an Event Partner with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
2021
We were honored as one of Inc. Magazine’s Best Workplaces, validating our thriving team culture. We also launched our DEI Design Team, focusing on our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
2022
We launched The Mighty GPS, an innovative tool designed to help organizations measure and improve their marketing maturity. We also took on our biggest higher education partnership to date with the University of Louisville, working to modernize their online experience.
2023
Our agency grew to 50+ Mighty Citizens for the first time, a milestone for our team. We also formally launched our philanthropy committee to increase, enhance, and showcase our giving efforts. Additionally, we hired our first Senior Partnerships Manager, formally launching nationally into the higher education space.
2024
As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we have so much to be excited about! We relaunched the Mighty Big Grant with a $100,000 award, quadrupling our impact for our winner, National Park Trust. Additionally, we became B Corp Certified and re-designated as a Public Benefit Corporation, reflecting our dedication to making a meaningful impact. We also made Inc. Magazine’s 2025 Best Places to Work and were included on the Inc. 5000 for our growth.
